About Batian
Batian is the highest of Mount Kenya's three main summits at 5,199 metres, named by early colonial explorer Halford Mackinder after the Maasai laibon (medicine man) Batian. It was first climbed by Mackinder himself on September 13, 1899, with guides César Ollier and Joseph Brocherel - a remarkable feat of exploration mountaineering given the era.
Batian is separated from Nelion (5,188 m) by the Gate of the Mists, a narrow rock notch at approximately 5,100 metres. Connecting the two summits via this col is the crux of the combined Nelion-Batian climb. The traverse requires careful route-finding, exposed moves on steep rock, and is complicated by ice and rime that can form on the col even in the dry season. Most parties rate the Gate of the Mists as the most technically demanding section of the entire two-summit objective.
The standard approach for a Batian attempt is to ascend Nelion on day two (after reaching Top Hut / Howell Hut at 4,985 m on day one), traverse to Batian via the Gate of the Mists, and descend back to Top Hut for a second night before the full descent on day three. Some strong parties complete the traverse in a single day from Top Hut, but this demands an early start and good weather conditions.
From Batian's summit on a clear morning, the view is one of the most extraordinary in Africa: the entire Rift Valley to the west, the Aberdare plateau, the Indian Ocean on the rare clearest days, and immediately below - the remains of the Darwin, Forel, Diamond, and other glaciers that are visibly retreating every decade.
History
The first ascent of Batian (1899) by Mackinder was not repeated until 1929. Nelion - despite being only 11 metres lower - was not climbed separately until Eric Shipton and Percy Wyn-Harris traversed both summits in 1929, identifying Nelion as a distinct peak. The hut at 4,985 m bears Shipton's name.
