About Nelion
Nelion is the second-highest peak on Mount Kenya at 5,188 metres, separated from the summit - Batian (5,199 m) - by the Gate of the Mists, a narrow rock col at approximately 5,100 metres. The two peaks are so close in height that Nelion was not identified as a separate summit until decades after Batian's first ascent in 1899.
The Normal Route (also called the Standard Route) ascends the south-east face via a series of chimneys, cracks, and ledges rated at approximately Grade 4+ in the British technical grading system. Most roped pitches are within the capability of a competent recreational climber, but the altitude - already above 4,500 metres at the base of the technical climbing - means everything feels significantly harder than the grade suggests at sea level.
Top Hut (also known as Howell Hut) at 4,985 metres - the same altitude as Point Lenana - sits on the col between Nelion's south ridge and is the standard bivouac point. Most parties ascend to Top Hut on day one, spend the night, and summit Nelion on the morning of day two before descending. The ascent from Top Hut to Nelion's summit takes 2-4 hours depending on conditions and the climbers' pace.
The mountain is equatorial and the rock is generally solid - dark phonolite and basalt that makes for excellent friction climbing. However, the weather can change rapidly, and afternoon lightning storms are common in the wet season. Your guide will make the call on whether conditions are safe to climb.
